Local physicians promote PCOS awareness month, encouraging patients to learn more about the condition and explore clinical studies.
SEATTLE, WA – September is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Awareness month, a federally designated event designed to educate and increase awareness about the condition.
Women with PCOS have limited treatment options, but local researchers are seeking new options.
“This month is important for women with PCOS,” says Gynecologist, Robin Kroll, M.D. of Seattle Clinical Research Center. “PCOS Awareness Month is an important opportunity for women to learn about this disorder, speak up about their condition, and know that other women share the same symptoms.”
PCOS is the leading cause of infertility in women and affects approximately 1 in every ten women. Although the causes of PCOS is unknown, there are common symptoms associated with the condition.
“PCOS, is a hormonal disorder that affects multiple areas of the body,” states Dr. Kroll. “Common symptoms can include irregular menstrual cycles, excessive hair growth, and infertility. Women with PCOS may be at increased risk for diabetes and heart disease, so it is important to recognize the signs and seek medical care
There are currently no specific medications approved for the treatment of PCOS, however, there are many therapies that can help with the symptoms and consequences of this disorder. Clinical research is searching for solutions to adequately treat this large group of women.
Dr. Kroll states that women participating in a clinical study receive a thorough and expert evaluation, (often not available at a primary care office) and may also access investigational medications that are not yet available commercially. “Participating in research not only provides new options for PCOS but it can also help participants better understand their condition.” states Dr. Kroll.
